Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, a Republican, immediately gaveled out of the special session declared by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), decrying it as a “stunt,” leading lawmakers to gavel into their own.

Even as DeSantis called the new bill "weaker," legislative Republicans pushed their legislation through the committee process Monday.

Monday morning, the Florida House moved swiftly to end the session without taking any action and call its own special session on illegal immigration.

During day two of Florida’s special session, the House returned with a bill that did not meet Governor DeSantis’s expectations.

So far, after Monday’s start, the Senate has passed an immigration bill and a disaster relief bill that would help victims of Hurricane Helene in Tennessee. These bills will still have to be passed by the House in order to head to Lee’s desk for signing.

There are 10 total bills filed for the special session called by Gov. Bill Lee, including five bills in the House and their five companion bills in the Senate. The special session will convene on Monday, Jan. 27.
