ICE, Minneapolis killings stir up California governor's race as Democratic candidates criticize each other over past votes to fund border security, immigration

Several possible candidates for governor have recently said they won’t run. The Bee has compiled a guide to see who’s in the race.

Rep. Eric Swalwell appeared to say former ICE agents would be "un-hirable" in California if he becomes governor, according to statements he made on Tuesday.

Candidates participating in the debate include Steve Hilton, Tom Steyer, Eric Swalwell, Tony Thurmond, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Betty Yee.

In an interview with The Examiner, Villaraigosa, a Democrat who served two terms as Los Angeles mayor from 2005 to 2013 and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018, laid out a vision for California that is decidedly restrained. It’s one that he describes as a “course correction” for many of the state’s excesses.
