GRAWN, Mich. – Residents of a Blair Township neighborhood south of Traverse City were kept away from their homes for nearly six hours after an F-16 military fighter plane crashed nearby, leaked jet fuel, and sent hazardous plumes into the air.

The F-16 crashed after it might have hit a bird, it was reported on air traffic control radio. Residents were warned to monitor for exposure symptoms.

Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine said she was told the aircraft was an F-16 but does not have "100% confirmation." The pilot parachuted out before it crashed, she said.

Emergency services are responding to reports of a plane crash in Northern Michigan. According to the National Guard, the plane was an F-16 that originated from the Texas Air National Guard 149.

Witnesses heard explosions, saw black smoke and watched emergency crews swarm Blair Township after the military jet went down.

Responders are heading to a reported plane crash near County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road in Blair Township. County Road 633 has been shut down.
