Ready for a ride without a driver? Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he wants to bring self-driving ride-share service to Florida.

Tesla reported double-digit declines in second-quarter revenue and profit as CEO Elon Musk doubled down on autonomous vehicle ambitions while facing California regulatory challenges that could disrupt expansion plans.

Tesla doesn't have the permits to run an autonomous vehicle taxi in California, but probably nothing stops a driver-assist based taxi.

Tesla is reported to have had plans to rollout a robotaxi service in San Francisco as early as this weekend. But state officials say they are not permitted to do such a thing and haven't even applied for a permit.

The CPUC confirmed Friday that Tesla has not applied for the necessary authorization to operate autonomous vehicles for public passenger service-paid or unpaid-in the state. The clarification comes in direct response to reports that Tesla planned to launch its robotaxi service in the Bay Area as early as this weekend.
