Though the Astros have re-engaged with Bregman, general manager Dana Brown on Saturday characterized any potential reunion as a “long shot” given the state of Houston’s roster. Brown intimated that Bregman’s slow-moving market surprised the club and caused it to circle back.

While the Houston Astros still have interest in Alex Bregman, their discussions about a potential reunion with the free-agent third baseman have been mostly “internal,” general manager Dana Brown said Tuesday.

A reunion between Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros could be on the horizon, which means Jose Altuve could be on the move -- positionally.

Houston's longtime star at second base is reportedly considering a position move in order to retain Bregman in free agency, as first reported by USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Altuve would fill the Astros' current void in left field, while Paredes—the assumed starting third baseman sans Bregman—would move to second.

The Houston Astros were long thought to be out of the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. They even tried to pivot to Nolan Arenado, and when that trade fell through, they signed Christian Walker and chose to move the newly acquired Isaac Paredes to third base.

During the Ryan Pressly trade conference call Tuesday, Astros GM Dana Brown acknowledged the team has talked internally about a reunion with Alex Bregman, though he added he has not yet reached out to agent Scott Boras.
