FORT MYERS, Fla. — Alex Bregman can easily take a pitch off the edge of the plate. He’s a picky hitter, one who will never deviate from his plan to swing at the right pitch. It’s a huge reason why Bregman has been able to carve out a nine-year Major League career that includes two All-Star appearances and a Silver Slugger award.

Alex Bregman at second base? Rafael Devers at DH? Masataka Yoshida back in the outfield? The Red Sox have some decisions to make when it comes to their defense. Here are a few possible alignments.

Boston's incumbent third baseman Rafael Devers has publicly said he does not want to cede his position to Bregman

When Rafael Devers signed an 11-year extension with the Red Sox in 2023, he believed it came with the understanding he would be the team’s third baseman for the long term. Just two years into that deal, the Red Sox now have a better defensive third baseman on the roster in the newly signed Alex Bregman.

Alex Bregman had other offers to consider, but chose Boston. He said he came here to win, but there hasn't been much of that with the Red Sox of late.

Bregman is a superior defender to Devers, who has led the American League in errors at third base in seven consecutive seasons. Devers’ -6 OAA (Outs Above Average) last season ranked in the bottom-eight percentile, according to Baseball Savant.

Former Houston Astros All-Star Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, ending his nine-year tenure in Texas by accepting a three-year, $120 million deal with the AL East club. Bregman turned down longer-term contracts from the Astros and others for the shorter but higher annual salary deal.
