Google is updating its ubiquitous search engine with the next generation of its artificial intelligence technology as part of an effort to provide instant expertise amid intensifying competition from smaller competitors.

The US Justice Department has demanded that Google sell its Chrome browser to break up its alleged monopoly in online search. The department also wants Google to cease paid agreements for being the default search engine on various platforms.

Google is also expanding the existing AI Overviews that appear at the top of search results, making them 'faster and higher quality' for math, coding, and multimodal questions.

Google says its new AI Mode aims to give users "a wider and more diverse" set of results than AI Overviews.
