Clarke Schmidt was experiencing side soreness ahead of the New York Yankees' showdown with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, so the club pushed his next start back to Tuesday.

Side soreness, precaution and a fairly well-rested Yankees bullpen resulted in Clarke Schmidt being scratched from his scheduled start Saturday.

The Yankees' pitching depth is stretched extremely thin. Gerrit Cole is out for the year after elbow surgery. Luis Gil is not expected back until July after suffering a lat strain this spring. Marcus Stroman’s supposedly "quick trip" to the injured list has been extended by a knee issue that isn’t going away.
