While there can be bad apples in any profession, including surgery, to make a blanket statement that orthopedic surgeons (of which I am one) choose implants based purely on how much a company pays us is completely inaccurate. First of all, receiving payments simply to use an implant is actually illegal and violates both the Anti-kickback Statute and the False Claims Act. Moreover, most of us just choose the implant that we are most comfortable with and that we think will do best in our patients.
