The retouching process is arguably the most fun and difficult part of any conservation. While it’s exciting to literally reassemble the image and make the damage disappear, it’s also the thing that the viewer will see first. Slicing, chipping or scraping the alien matter or gunk off is a slow and delicate process and might still necessitate retouching. The moment of truth comes after the varnish is applied and one can check the quality of their work. The two main things to watch for are color matching as sometimes colors can shift after the varnish is applied and of course we want any retouching to look just like the painting, that is; be invisible.
