In Almaty, you really feel the layers of Kazakhstan’s history. Like Astana, much of Almaty’s grid-like center was planned—albeit a whole century earlier. So on a walk through the city, you’ll come across wooden tsarist-era constructions as well as many landmarks from Kazakhstan’s Soviet era. The space where the Green Bazaar stands now used to be where merchants and caravans were received. And I unexpectedly came across a statue of Viktor Tsoi—a famous Soviet musician and Koryo-saram—ethnic Korea
